CENTER FOR PRIMARY CARE PRACTICE AND EDUCATION
The Center for Primary Care Practice and Education (CPCPE) was founded by United Family Healthcare (UFH) in June 2012 to enhance the primary care expertise in the UFH health system and China. Our vision is for UFH to become an internationally recognized model of excellence for integrated, effective, safe and accessible health care.
To achieve this vision, the CPCPE develops, disseminates and implements standards for the ongoing practice, education and training of healthcare personnel engaged in an integrated delivery of all aspect of care within the United Family Healthcare system. It is our hope that the Center’s success will benefit United Family Healthcare, its affiliated facilities and China’s primary care community.
The CPCPE also hopes to use its resources and knowledge to partner with interested organizations to promote primary care practice in China.
THE PRACTICE OF PRIMARY CARE
“Primary care,” defined in the context for the CPCPE, means essential health services. Essential health services are services that are involved with the primary, secondary or tertiary prevention and management of diseases. The “Practice of Primary Care” for the CPCPE is a culture of medical practice that promotes access to comprehensive, coordinated and continuous care of essential health services. This primary care practice culture is created and maintained through human resource management, education, work flows, registries, and policies that promote integrated health care.
Excellent primary care practice requires integration and at times deliberate redesign of existing health practices. Efficient integration of individually complex processes such as medical departments has been the subject of several studies in the healthcare and business fields. The United Family Healthcare system is in a unique position to become an internationally recognized model for primary care practice as it provides a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services and are viewed by most of our patients as their “medical home”.

Training Program
The United Family Healthcare Family Medicine Training Program (UFH FMTP) is an internal training program created to meet primary care staffing needs within the UFH system. Beiyi Hospitals
Since 2012, UFH FM training program has provided English talks and workshops to the General Medicine residents of Peking Medical School’s First, Second and Third affiliated hospitals. Their residents rotate at Beijing United Family Hospital to observe and learn how primary care is delivered in an international setting. The faculty at BeiYi hospital serves as advisors to the UFH FM Training Program Advisory Board.
Stanford University, United States
Telemedicine: In 2015, United Family Hospitals and Clinics started a telemedicine consultation project with Stanford University Medical Center Lucille-Packard Children’s Hospital. The UFH Family Medicine Training Program took part in the very first telemedicine consultation on a complex pediatric case. We are participating in this project in the hope of providing access to world-class medical care for underserved orphan children in China.
Guest lecturer: The UFH Family Medicine Training Program invited Dr. Ewen Wang of the Stanford Pediatric Emergency Department to give a teleconference CME lecture which was telecast to many of our facilities. We hope to arrange regular talks from Dr. Wang and her colleagues.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to have an active Chinese medical license?
Yes. In addition, at this time we are only able to accept Chinese nationals and holders of passports from Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau.
Am I guaranteed a job with UFH after I graduate from this program?
Our hope is to train excellent family doctors who will stay on to become members of the UFH team. However depending on the staffing needs of the various service areas, it is possible that we may not be able to offer you a long term contract with UFH.
Will you provide a certificate of residency training upon completion of the program?
We are currently not an official training site, so we are unable to offer an official certificate of residency completion at this time. You will receive a certificate of completion from our training program upon successful completion.
Can I finish the program in less than 3 years?
Although this is possible, it is very unlikely unless you have had extensive international clinical experience in primary care. We have found that three years is probably the minimum time needed to successfully train high quality family medicine physicians who meet international standards.
Is an international rotation guaranteed or a required part of the training?
We do our best to offer our fellows a chance to go abroad, however this is not a guaranteed or required part of your training. It is only offered to trainees in good academic standing and is dependent on the availability of slots at the international site.
If I have a traditional Chinese medicine license, can I apply?
We accept applications from graduates of traditional Chinese medical schools, however you must have a western medical license. We do not accept candidates with only traditional Chinese medical licenses.
What are the salaries and benefits?
Your monthly total take home pay will be competitive compared with other physicians of similar training level and seniority. Social insurance and benefits are in line with the Chinese Labor Law.
How much time off will I get?
Days off are determined in accordance with Chinese labor laws. Between days allotted for reading time and paid time off – it is generally around 12 days per year.
What are my teachers like?
Currently, we have primary care and specialists physicians working at UFH from 50 different countries who may all contribute to your learning. Our current core family medicine physicians are from the UK, USA, Belgium, France, Canada, and Australia.
